Requirements for Coaches

1. Cal Ripken Online Coaches Course Completed (Certification)

With the requirement that all baseball coaches affiliated with Babe Ruth League, Inc. and Ripken Baseball, Inc. become certified prior to coaching games, the Ripken Baseball Web site makes it easy for you to gain your certification quickly and effectively through the convenience of online learning.  If you have registered online as a manager/head coach, you will receive an email with instructions on how to proceed with certification. Assistant coaches do not need to take this course. 

Beginning January 1, 2012 a new State law goes into effect.

The City of Scottsdale will not issue a permit nor will you be able to play on any school field until you meet this new requirement. Arizona recently passed SB 1521 which requires the education of coaches, athletes and parents of the danger of concussions and head injuries. In an effort to ensure the well being of children who play sports using school facilities, the City of Scottsdale is requiring that each coach in your organization complete a free, on-line course regarding concussions. The course takes approximately 20 minutes and at the end of the course a certificate will be issued. Once your coaches take the course, they do not have to take it again. Any new coaches, however, will have to take the course.

Once registered as an assistant coach, you will receive an email with instructions on how to proceed with certification. 

Background checks for all coaches of SCR will be conducted prior to the start of the season. 

A requirement from the Babe Ruth League is the Abuse Prevention Training Course.  This is a requirement for all managers, coaches and assistant coaches.  If you have registered online as a manager/head coach, you will receive an email with instructions on how to proceed with certification. Assistant coaches do not need to take this course.

Coaches Corner

Excessive pitching

Many injuries occur from excessive pitching, and can be prevented if players and coaches follow these safety guidelines.

To decrease shoulder and elbow problems from excessive pitching:

• Follow the guidelines about the number of innings pitched as specified by the individual?s baseball league (a maximum of 2 innings per game is allowed in SCR).
• While there is no concrete guideline for the number of pitches allowed, a reasonable approach is to count the number of pitches thrown and use 50 to 75 pitches as a maximum in a game, and 30 to 40 pitches in a practice. (younger aged players should thow even less. 25 -40 a game)
• We strive to protect our young players arms.  We also enourage our players and coaches to throw only fastballs and change ups at this age.  
• Any persistent pain should disqualify a child from playing until pain subsides.

Protective gear

Protective equipment is one of the most important factors in minimizing the risk of injury in baseball. Here are some safety tips to prevent injuries:

• Remember your equipment must fit properly and be worn correctly.
• Wear a batting helmet at the plate, when waiting a turn at bat, and when running bases.
• Facial protection devices that are attached to batting helmets are available in some youth leagues. These devices can help reduce the risk of a serious facial injury if hit by a ball.
• The catcher must always use a catcher's mitt. If you play another position, ask your coach about specific size requirements for your mitt.
• Catchers should always wear a helmet, face mask, throat guard, long-model chest protector, protective supporter, and shin guards.
• Most youth leagues require you wear molded, cleated baseball shoes. NO SPIKES ALLOWED IN SCR League.

Before Each Practice and Game "Inspect the playing field for holes, glass, and other debris"

Make Sure all Dugouts and Fields are cleaned up after your practice or game!
