**Tournament qualification requires Spring 2021 enrollment in the Scottsdale Cal Ripken league.  Fall baseball does not impact eligibility.  See below for details.**

Each year, Scottsdale Cal Ripken teams compete in a state level tournament against the other Arizona Cal Ripken teams.  Depending on the age group, winning teams can advance to regionals and even to a national championship.

2021 Summer TOURNAMENT INFORMATION

Cal Ripken Baseball holds state and regional baseball tournaments each year, these tournaments occur each summer.  As a state franchise, Scottsdale Cal Ripken (SCR Baseball League) members are entitled to participate in the sponsored tournaments.  The tournament teams are made up from the best players in each age division. The tournaments provide the opportunity to travel with a team and play against the best players in the other Arizona and other western regional Cal Ripken Baseball leagues.  The tournament season begins in the second week of May with practices and depending on the outcome of the State tournament, the regional tournaments are held the third or fourth week of July.

As we are progressing through the Spring Season, I will be updating the 2021 tournament information below.  These divisions will participate:

Since the tournaments are aged based and not division based, your player is allowed to play on any team they are age eligible.  So for example if your player is in the Minors division and is 8 years old, the player is eligible to play for every team.  However, you must decide for your player which division they would like to try out in.  The “magic” baseball age date for players is 5/1/2021.  So for example, a player wanting to play in 8U cannot turn 9 before 5/1/2021.

Regional tournaments are usually in July outside of Arizona, and are for every division EXCEPT Machine Pitch.  Machine Pitch does not have a Regional Tournament.

To participate, you must agree to play in the Regional Tournament if your team wins the state tournament.

There is no payment required for registration in the tryouts; however if selected to the team, there will be costs for tournament registration and team uniforms.  Registration fees will be $200.  In addition to the registration fees and depending on the location of the tournament, there may be added expenses for travel, hotels, and meals (state and regionals).  It should also be understood that there is a required commitment of time for practices and scrimmages.  Since there is only four weeks to prepare, practice times are likely to increase over a regular season schedule.  Further, if the state tournament team wins, the players and parents should be prepared to take the entire week to travel to the regional tournament.  Check your vacation schedules to determine if there are conflicts.

The goal of the Tournament Teams is to select the best possible players for the roster.  SCR Board members will review selection criteria and roster creations before announcing the final team, and select Team Managers and Coaches at that time.  If we have enough players to field multiple teams, we will consider fielding additional teams with the remaining players.

There should be no expectation of staying with your same coach or even players on your team.  If there is an abundance of players, some players may not be selected to a team.  It is important to talk with your child about this possibility.  It is also important to understand that whereas during the season all players are required to play in the field, during the tournament, there may be circumstances or instances when your child will not play.  This is the coach’s prerogative and decision. 

Tryouts will be the following dates for the All Star teams:

April 9th and 16th at Thompson Peak Park - times will be announced as we get closer.  Registrations have already been setup on the SCR website.  Attending one tryout is necessary for your player to have a chance of being selected.  If a player attends both tryouts, the best evaluation will be used in the selection process.

When will we know if our player made the team?

• Usually teams are formed about a week after the tryouts

When are practices?

• Practices will typically be 3 to 4 times per week and will be held after 5 on weekdays and possibly weekend if fields are available

Who are the coaches?

• Head coaches will be determined after players have been selected.  We may ask for volunteers for each level ahead of time, with no promise that your player will be selected.

How many teams will be at each age level?

• That will be finalized after tryouts, with typically 1-2 teams per age level
